Easy Ways to Keep Your Kitchen Cool

It can be tricky to keep your kitchen cool in the summer, especially if you have south facing windows or need to use the oven for an extended period of time.

Aside from doing a full kitchen reno to make some structural changes to cool things down, here are some easy ways to keep your kitchen cool.

1. Don’t Cook!

Summer is a great time for light & easy food. Choose wraps & sandwiches, salads, fruits & veggies over a roast and you’ll save your self a few degrees in the kitchen.

2. BBQ

There is really nothing better than grilling on a summer evening. Invite some friends over, play some lawn games, and share a BBQ feast.

3. Window Wisdom / Get a Cross Breeze

Many kitchens will only have one window, or several windows that are all on one wall. Opening the window doesn’t always help because there is no cross breeze. Find the other windows in the house that facilitates the cross breeze and open them, too.

You may also want to consider blocking out some of that hot sun to keep things cool. Some nice dark shades during peak sun hours can keep your kitchen cool for the rest of the day.

4. Kitchen Fans

There are some really great modern looking fans available that won’t compromise the charm of your kitchen while keeping it cool.

5. Bake in the AM

6. Bake smaller portions

If you’re making a baked item split it into smaller portions so you can reduce bake time. For example, if you’re making a meatloaf put it in a muffin tin so you have smaller individual meatloaves.

7. Use Small Appliances

Slow cookers, toaster ovens & pressure cookers aren’t just for winter meals. Using these small appliances can not only keep your kitchen cooler, but they often do the job faster (or with less hands on time) so you don’t even have to be IN the kitchen.
